Key Vocabulary in Media

  •  Target Audience - The consumer of which a particular media product is aimed out.
                             - This can be broken down into the worlds demographics. These are: age, gender, sexuality, social class, backgrounds, ethnicity. 
  • Genre -  The type of media product. Eg/ Horror, Comedy, Western and Romance
  • Conventions - These are typical characteristics you expect to see in a given genre. Eg/ The way the characters are portrayed and the locations they are filmed.
  • Codes - A way of conveying meaning to audiences without using words to explain what's going on. There are two different types of codes: symbolic - the props and costumes the actors/actresses use/wear and technical - the way the camera and lighting is used.
